What Is Afterpay?
In decades past, if you wanted to buy something now but pay for it later, that was what credit cards were for. Yet racking up credit card debt is never fun, and that’s putting it lightly.
Today, you can rely on a variety of buy-now, pay-later services, Afterpay chief among them. Afterpay works with retailers of all kinds, including pet care, eyewear, sporting goods, clothing, shoes, baby and children’s clothing, skincare, fragrances, and even sustainable goods.
How does Afterpay work? If you’re approved to use their service, then you can buy the plus-sized clothes, shoes, or lingerie you want now, then pay for the goods over four payments. The payments are scheduled to occur every two weeks, and the amount you pay is in smaller chunks of the overall purchase price.
Afterpay never charges interest, and when you make your payments on time, you don’t have to worry about extra fees either. That makes using Afterpay quick, convenient, and easy.

How to Use Afterpay
You’re sold! You’re ready to try Afterpay so you can shop for what you want now and then pay for it later interest-free. How do you get started?
You have two ways to use Afterpay, either through your favorite plus-size retailer’s website or within the Afterpay app. We’ll tell you how to do both now.
Using Afterpay When Checking Out
When you’re on the website of a plus-sized retailer you like on the above list, be it an old favorite or one you’ve just discovered from our suggestions, shop as you usually do. Fill your cart and then view what’s in there.
Depending on the layout of the website, you should see the Afterpay logo somewhere on the page, either above or underneath your cart. When you go to check out, instead of paying via credit or debit card, select Afterpay.
If you already have an Afterpay login, then you’ll be asked to sign in. You can also take this time to create an Afterpay account if you haven’t already. Before you can check out, Afterpay will scan for some pertinent details. This is the approval process, which they tout as being quick and easy.
What are the criteria Afterpay looks at when approving you? They review how much money you’re trying to spend and if you have the funds. Afterpay prefers you have at least 25 percent of the value of the item on your credit or debit card.
Your approval is not guaranteed, but once you’re in, you’re in. You can continue using Afterpay anytime through an approved retailer without having to jump through the hoops again.
You must be a United States resident to use Afterpay and you have to be at least 18 years or older. If you don’t have a credit or debit card, you’re also ineligible. The value of your item must be at least $35 as well.
The amount of money that Afterpay will put towards your purchase might be a little low at first, but don’t worry. Within six weeks of using Afterpay and paying back the money you owe, the amount Afterpay is willing to loan you will increase.
Using the Afterpay App
If you do most of your shopping on your smartphone or tablet through apps, you should download the Afterpay app. It’s available for free on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
Once the app is installed on your phone or tablet, it’s sort of like using the Afterpay website, but on your phone. Search for your favorite stores through the app, then begin shopping. Checking out may be even faster and easier since you’re doing it within the Afterpay app.
What Are the Benefits of Afterpay?
Are you still deciding whether you want to do some plus-size clothing shopping through Afterpay? Here are some upsides to the service that ought to help you make up your mind!
Prevents You from Racking up More Credit Card Debt
Listen, credit card debt is no joke. Having significant debt can ding your credit, which makes it hard to buy or lease a car, rent an apartment, or put a down payment on a house. If you’re making 2021 the year you get your credit card debt under control, then using a service like Afterpay is a great idea.
Afterpay is like a credit card in that you don’t have to pay right now, but you’re expected to begin making payments within two weeks. Even better is you don’t have to pay back the full value of the item all at once, but in small increments. This gives your wallet a much-needed rest.
No Interest
Lots of services exist like Afterpay, such as Affirm, PayPal Credit, Splitit, and Sezzle. Not nearly as many of them offer interest-free payments though. Take Affirm, for example. If you have a six-month loan through Affirm with an APR of 20 percent, the interest could be 5.91 percent. Sure, it can’t go any higher than that, but that’s a significant interest rate!
Tacking on interest to a loan of any kind only makes the loan more difficult to completely pay off. Afterpay doesn’t slap you with any interest so you can fully pay off your purchases and then move on to the next one!
Smaller, More Affordable Payments
Listen, we’ve all fallen victim to an overpriced piece of clothing before. You typically have regret after buying it, right? With Afterpay, you can shop for some more expensive, high-quality items that you typically avoid because you know you won’t have to pay back the full cost right away.
If you’ve started at a new job or you’re trying to revitalize your plus-size wardrobe, Afterpay is a great way to go.
Easy Shopping
Afterpay supports a huge number of stores in all sorts of areas, as we discussed. Shopping through those stores and using Afterpay is really simple. If you’re on the app, you can shop without opening your web browser. When visiting a retailer’s website, like mentioned before, you just click Afterpay checkout and voila, you can save your payment for another day.
Now, as great as these benefits are, we do want to stress that Afterpay is a loan service. When you buy something through Afterpay, you’re expected to pay for it in full. Failing to do so could affect your credit and financial standing. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t use Afterpay, but do be aware of what you’re signing yourself up for before you proceed.
Conclusion
Afterpay is a buy-now, pay-later service that works with a variety of plus-sized stores and brands. Whether you’re doing your regular, everyday shopping or you want to stock up on something like plus-sized lingerie or shirts, we recommend using Afterpay!
